Our Mid-Year Book Freakout!

August 2, 2014 Features, Jennifer's Thoughts, Marianne's Thoughts 13

The incredible bloggers Chami and Ely over at A Book So Fathomless created the Mid-Year Book Freakout, where you pretty much get to fangirl over books and give your opinion on some of them. WOOO HOOO!
Marianne saw another blogger, Chiara at Books for a Delicate Eternity, do this and thought we could do it as well. Sounds like fun, so here we go!

1. Best book you’ve read so far in 2014.

Marianne – Dangerous Girls by Abigail Haas. I’ve read some pretty awesome books, but Dangerous Girls was amazing. It kept me on my toes the entire life.

Jennifer – My Life from Hell by Tellulah Darling. SO many feels and things happened in this book… But it was worth it all <3

2. Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2014.

Marianne – A tie between Split Second & World After

Jennifer – The audiobook for Beautiful Chaos was pretty amazing. The narrator had a strong and intriguing voice, plus the creepy sound effects and music added were mind-blowing into making it a great experience.

3. New release you haven’t read yet, but want to.

Marianne – THE WINNER’S CURSE. I even made a promotional post about this book and I still haven’t read it. *Cries* I don’t even own it. *cries*

Jennifer – RAIN BY AMANDA SUN!!!! I requested Harlequin for this book three times, both US and UK versions, and on a virtual event to see if I could get approved. So far no such luck, which means I’ll have to wait ’till Christmas, and see if my mom lets me buy more books ;-;

4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year.

Marianne – Chaos by Sarah Fine & The Retribution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin. Both of these are series enders and I’ve been left with a huge cliffhanger on both parts. I literally cannot wait.

Jennifer – The Blood of Olympus by Rick Riordan. Big fan of the Percy Jackson series, but not The Heroes of Olympus. I just want to know the spoilers of who and who doesn’t die xD

5. Biggest disappointment.

Marianne – Of Neptune by Anna Banks: Ugh I cannot even.

Jennifer – Between The Devil and The Deep Blue Sea by April G. Tucholke. No more words for this book. All there’s to say is in my review.

6. Biggest surprise.

Marianne – The Naturals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. I WAS SO SURPRISED, GUYS.

Jennifer – Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist by David Levithan and Rachel Cohn. I suffered with that audiobook! And to think I loved Dash and Lily’s Book Of Dares SO MUCH BY THE SAME AUTHORS! lol

7. Favourite new author. (Debut or new to you).

Marianne – KASIE WEST. <3 All her books are awesome. I’ve read all her books and eagerly anticipate the next one.

Jennifer – KASIE WEST. (Definitely didn’t copy Marianne…). Unlike the one above me, I’ve only read one of her books and fell in love so hard with her style and every word she wrote. Can’t wait for more! <33

8. Newest fictional crush.

Marianne – Titus from The Burning Sky <3 He is literally a sort of Prince Charming.

Jennifer – Jase Garrett from My Life Next Door. Brains, values, and physic… He could be all I want in a man and more <3

9. Newest favourite character.

Marianne – Karou from Daughter of Smoke of Bone. She’s awesome, you guys. Newest badass character I’ve read this year.

Jennifer – First I thought of was Tarver Merendsen from These Broken Stars. He’s awesome and my heart broke for him so many times when I was reaching the end of the book. Wish I could read more of him…

10. Book that made you cry.

Marianne – One Day by David Nicholls & On the Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta. THEY BOTH HAD ME UGLY CRYING. [Note from Jennifer: LOL]

Jennifer – Fighting for Infinity by Karen Amanda Hooper. THOSE LAST CHAPTERS GOSH… Karen always managed to make me cry…

11. Book that made you happy.

Marianne – Time After  Time by Tamara Ireland Stone. This book also falls under the “best sequel”, but it made me so incredibly happy when I read it that I decided to add it here.

Jennifer – Mine to Spell by Janeal Falor. Kick-ass heroine, magic, feminism… Lots to like <3 It was also a pretty amazing sequel 😀

12. Favourite book to film adaptation you saw this year.

Marianne – THE FAULT IN OUR STARS. No question. You can see our review of that movie, here.  Although If I Stay will probably be the death of me.

Jennifer – The Fault in Our Stars! Even though I read the book last year, I LOVED the movie and soundtrack <3

13. Favourite review you’ve written this year.

Marianne – Madly Deeply. It was in form of a poem and although I thought it wasn’t all that good everyone really enjoyed it.

Jennifer – Debbie Doesn’t Do It Anymore by Walter Mosley. It was like my other reviews I guess, but I liked that it got the attention of the author and he posted it on his Facebook page with a fragment of what I wrote. This resulted on a raise of viewers we’ve never had before, and we hope we might have again xD

14. Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received).

Marianne – Cover-wise: The Special Edition of Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell.

Jennifer – Um… I really like the cover for Eat, Brains, Love by Jeff Hart. Still have to read it, but the cover is really… creative xD

15. What books do you need to read by the end of the year?

Marianne – Allegiant, Prodigy, Champion, Grave Mercy, Shiver, The Book Thief. Basically all the books unread on my shelf.

Jennifer – Of Triton, Lola and The Boy Next Door, Pivot Point, Pride and Prejudice, Just One Day, Insurgent, Mansfield Park, and the rest of my to-read pile…

The following two tabs change content below.
We're two Puertorican girls who want to share our love of reading with the world. We sometimes substitute words for GIFS and either rant or fangirl a lot in our reviews. Talk to us about anything! 🙂
  • I enjoyed reading your answers, ladies! And totally not lying here but I also answered the questions in my head and we girls have the same answers.. I’d say 50% same, Lol, especially the movie part. I loved the soundtrack too!

  • Marianne: DANGEROUS GIRLS! HUZZAH! That book totally knocked my socks off as well Marianne! 😀 It already has earned it’s spot on my “Best-of-2014” list and the year isn’t even over yet – haha! The Winner’s Curse is absolutely wonderful – don’t be nervous because of the hype!

Jennifer: I am so excited for Blood of Olympus as well! I’ll confess I don’t love the Heroes of Olympus series quite as much as the PJ series, but it’s still quite entertaining, and I’m interested in seeing how everything ends. 🙂

Lovely post girls, and thanks for sharing! <3

  • I absolutely love this survey! Reading people’s answers are so fun!

Marianne: Okay, that’s it. I NEED to get myself a copy of Dangerous Girls already! Also, THE WINNER’S CURSE!!! I need to read that too! I actually got a copy for my birthday back in April, and it’s on my August TBR, so here’s hoping. ON THE JELLICOE ROAD!!!!!!! Oh. My. God. I love that book so much! I read it in one sitting back in April and May and ugh, I just need to re-read it already. I can never decide which cover of Fangirl I prefer! Both the original and the special edition are so gorgeous!

Marianne and Jennifer: Kasie West is just amazing! I’ve read all of her books (with the exception of On the Fence this year, and I just loved them all – I’m dying to read One the Fence! The Fault in Our Stars was so amazing! I’m so glad that it did the book justice. 🙂

Jennifer: Jase! <3 <3 <3 <3 and Tarver! <3 I'm upset that we don't get to read more of him too! I am fairly sure Tarver and Lilac are in This Shattered World, but they’re not the main focus, and that makes me sad. The Cover of Eat, Brains, Love is so interesting and different! I like it.

    • Yes. Yes. YOU NEED TO GET DANGEROUS GIRLS. Everyone should get to reading that book! At least you own The Winner’s Curse!

  • Also, thank you so much for sharing a wonderful post with us all. 🙂

  • Oh, this interview looks like so much fun, I’ll make sure to do it myself! I’m totally jealous of the special edition of Fangirl Marianne, because I can’t justify having 3 copies. Glad to hear you guys have enjoyed Kasie West’s books, she is really something! I totally agree with Dangerous Girls, it was awesome!

  • This is such a cool idea for a post, very helpful! I’ve definitely got some new additions for my forever growing TBR pile 🙂

  • Oops. I’ve haven’t read many of the books you mentioned >.<

YES to The Winner's Curse – it is seriously amazing and ARIN.

The Fault in Our Stars was an absolutely amazing book to movie adaptation. I am still recovering, to be quite honest with you </3

I loved your Madly, Deeply review, Marianne! It was all kind of fabulous ^.^

I REALLY want to buy the special edition of Fangirl because I love that book so much, and that edition just looks SO PRETTY. Eeep *grabby hands*

And except for a select few of the books you girls want to read by the end of the year … I want to read them, too, haha XD
