Sneaking Candy

Goodreads Summary:

All I ever wanted was to make a name for myself as Candice Salinas, creative writing grad student at the University of Miami. Of course, secretly I already have made a name for myself: as Candy Sloane, self-published erotic romance writer. Though thrilled that my books are selling and I have actual fans, if anyone at UM found out, I could lose my scholarship…and the respect of my faculty advisor, grade-A-asshole Professor Dylan. Enter James Walker, super-hot local barista and—surprise!—my student. Even though I know a relationship is totally off-limits, I can’t stop myself from sneaking around with James, taking a few cues from my own erotic writing…if you catch my drift. Candy’s showing her stripes for the first time in my real life, and I’ve never had so much fun. But when the sugar high fades, can my secrets stay under wraps?

After having tried a few New Adult books, I was starting to lose hope. Then Sneaking Candy came in to give me brand new shining hope…

Working for pretentious grade-A asshole Professor Dylan might not be ideal for everyone, but for Candice he’s the key to her future. She’s a grad student at University of Miami  where she also teaches her own classes, and is TA for said Professor , a renowned author who will put her in line to a successful career. Because she didn’t go to med school like her parents dreamed she would, they disinherited her plus cut all communications, leaving Candice without much money for her education and living when a scholarship isn’t enough. In an attempt to gain some cash she created Candy Sloane, an indie author of… erotic romance. No one at her Uni can find out that though, hence the pen name. If they ever did, the faculty would take her scholarship and her whole future as a writer will be ruined.

Enter in the picture a weird kind of attraction towards her faculty adviser, Professor Dylan. Another big no no of Uni. Now add sexy and hunky star-shinning writer, barista, STUDENT, James, and Candice’s life is up for a ride as everything seems to spiral out of control with two sides of a coin. In one part we have shy, educated, controlled and goodie-two-shoes Candice, and in the other sexy, wild, out-of-control Candy, two sides of the same person fighting for who to take over the steering wheel.

With the description I imagined this book’s plot to be instead a side plot while the main act would be THE ACT, meaning sex sex and yes, more erotic sex between Candice and the two hot stuff males. I was wrong. I was so utterly wrong, it was like I had the ultimate plot twist thrown at me in a refreshing way that makes me want to read this book again.

The book also makes a point in the kinds of authors and writers that we have nowadays. Just because you’re an indie and write a certain kind of genre it doesn’t mean that you’re not as much of a writer as the person at the top of the New York Times Bestseller list. It also makes a point in grasping all the parts of yourself and not push them out at the convenience of other’s opinion.

I loved Candice and James. They were both these people that were slowly falling from lust to love and were so cute together. Candice was shy on the outside but outspoken in the inside, smart, a fighter, and stood her ground for what she believed in and wanted against all odds. James is the ultimate sexy and cute and attractively smart caring guy I dream to meet some day…

The story dealt with Candice’s life and relationships with her parents too, her own life, what she wants and how to deal with it. She was afraid of dealing with some things and facing the truth. When we reach almost the end she is a whole different person, grasping both her sides and no more running off. She behaved like an adult and did what was needed to be done. It wasn’t only romance, it was also self-discovery and being strong in your beliefs.

Being an adult is no easy deal.

Overall, it was a fast, funny, quirky and insightful story with twists here and there and a great conclusion to it all. There was character development, great and intriguing plot, did I also mention sexy and steamy scenes? Sex might not be the main main thing here, but it is there and wow, where can I find a James? :O

  • Sounds fantastic, I usually shy away from these teacher/student romances but this one sounds like it was fleshed out well. Glad you found an NA that you enjoy!
