In the tradition of Alice Hoffman’s Practical Magic , one girl chooses to change her fortune and her fate by falling in love.
Love is real in the town of Grimbaud, and Fallon Dupree has dreamed of attending high school there for years. After all, generations of Duprees have successfully followed the (100% accurate!) love fortunes from Zita’s famous Love Charms Shop to happily marry their high school sweethearts. It’s a tradition. So she is both stunned and devastated when her fortune states that she will NEVER find love.
Fortunately, Fallon isn’t the only student with a terrible love fortune, and a rebellion is brewing. Fallon is determined to take control of her own fate—even if it means working with a notorious heartbreaker like Sebastian.
Will Fallon and Sebastian be able to overthrow Zita’s tyranny and fall in love?
“You could try me out sometime, you know, with the dating thing.” His tone was teasing. “Who knows? We could fall in love.”
This story is all kinds of cute! It’s set in a very quirky town where charms and predictions and magic are an every day occurrence. Every year they congregate in Zita’s Love Charms Shop to get a prediction about their love lives (which always comes true).
I really enjoyed this book! The protagonist, Fallon, was a bit difficult to relate to at first because she was so juvenile and immature. However I realize that she was 15 years old, so seeing her grow and learn throughout the story was really enjoyable.
In fact, I really liked all of the characters in this book. They’re all really nicely developed and I loved how they were all original and easily distinguishable. They all make the story better; I’m excited for the next book because it’s going to be about a character I really liked in this one! 🙂
This being a Swoon Reads title, you can be sure there was a really cute and swoony romance. Sebastian and Fallon are an unlikely couple at first; Sebastian was the kind of guy who didn’t take relationships seriously while Fallon was the kind of girl who’s life revolved around finding “the one”. Fallon can’t stand Sebastian at first, and I always love romances that are like that! As they get to know each other, and see what lies beneath the surface, their romance keeps developing and getting as adorable as ever. By the end I was swooning with their romance because it was absolutely adorable!
I like that this book also has a small thrilling aspect on the side that brings together a couple of characters so they can “rebel” against Zita and her predictions. I thought it was a great way to keep me passing the pages and to guess what was happening next!
I read this in a couple of hours! The way it’s written definitely makes for a quick read, not to mention the writing is so easy to devour! I really couldn’t help but keep passing the pages. The story demanded to be read!
Overall, this is definitely a book that puts the Swoon in Swoon Reads. It was romantic, quirky, and funny. The writing was on point, the characters were relatable and lovable, the storyline was enthralling, and it all wrapped up nicely with a bit of magical realism that really brought the story together. I can’t wait for the next installment in this series! <3

Two boys discover that true love is harder than it looks, even in the charming town of Grimbaud, in this lovely novella from the author of Love Fortunes and Other Disasters.
Nico is worried. Again. After freeing Martin from the illegal love charms of his evil ex-girlfriend, Nico was sure that their love would be the perfect romance he'd been waiting for. But it's been months and Nico's still waiting for his first kiss. Between Martin's dedication to student government and Nico's responsibilities at his family's tourism business, there's been no time for romance or kisses. Fortunately, the Canal Festival is coming up and like all Grimbaud events, it will befilled with romance...especially the Water Parade, Nico's favorite part. And this year, Nico will be the captain of his own small boat! It's the perfect opportunity for a romantic (and hopefully kiss-filled) date with his boyfriend. There's just one small problem: Martin is afraid of drowning. Will Nico's dreams of a romantic first kiss be sunk before they are even launched?
P.S. While it’s listed as book #3 in Goodreads, it seems more as book #1.5 for me. It can even be read as a prequel if you don’t mind slight spoilers and want to have a “feel” as to what this series is really about! You have nothing to lose, plus it’s FREE!
I thought this was a short but sweet read. Nico & Martin are a really complicated couple, so I loved that this story was told in both POVs.
It’s such a sweet story about these two boys trying to be comfortable with who they really are and accepting each other. When we first start the book, we aren’t even entirely sure if Martin even likes boys, so seeing him trying to understand his feelings towards Nico was very sweet. From the first book in this series, we already know Nico likes Martin, but here we get to see him evaluate if he likes him for who he is, or for the image he had in his head.
I thought each boy individually was absolutely wonderful, so seeing them slowly fall for each other was so cute! No joke, I ship them SO HARD. I was rooting for them to get together because I could see how much they actually liked each other and I was ready to lock them in a room together so they COULD FINALLY GET TOGETHER.
Overall, this was such a cute read. There’s even a bit a drama thrown in to make the book all the more exciting, which I loved. I wish I could’ve read more! I’m so glad this was a free read on Amazon. It totally helped me in the wait for book two in the series.
