Twisted Good Fairytales

March 5, 2014 Marianne's Thoughts 18

love Fairytales. I especially love fairytale retellings! Here are a few retellings that I’ve either read, or really would love to read:

The Fairest of Them All by Carolyn Turgeon

This book was amazing! This book talks about how Rapunzel grew up to be Snow White’s Evil Stepmother… You will not see those plot twists coming!

Cruel Beauty By Rosamund Hodge

The Beast is a red eyed demon, and the Beauty has to kill him. She’s in love with him, but her duty is more important than her heart. Sound interesting yet?

The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly

This book takes all those stories you loved as a little kid: Red Riding Hood, Rumplestiltskin, Snow White. And twists them… into things that may just scar you for life. But, it’s one of my all-time favorite books.

Splintered by A.G. Howard

If you can only ever read one Alice in Wonderland retelling, be sure it’s this one. Think the White Rabbit is cute and fluffy? Think again! Here, Wonderland is a dark and twisted place, and if you go in, there’s no coming back.

Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige

Why must Dorothy die?! I haven’t read this one, but I’m really looking forward to it! And you know, I’d like to see Dorothy die… Seems fun.

And, because although this is a movie and not technically a book, I would like to mention Maleficient.

Doesn’t that trailer give you the chills? Especially that song! OhmyGod! I loved everything about this trailer and I’m so excited that we’re going to see a “darker” side to Disney!

So, that’s all for today. Comment below if you’ve read (or want to read!) any of the books listed here. Have a great day!

  • Fairy tales are kind of my favorite. I’ve either read, or want to read all of those books too, AND Sleeping Beauty was the Disney movie of my childhood. I CANNOT wait for Maleficent!

    • Argh yes! I can’t wait for Maleficient either. Especially seeing Angelina Jolie as her.

  • I read Cruel Beauty and I thought it was good. If you like retellings try Sisters Red by Jackson Pearce. I loved it!

    • Thanks for the suggestion! I’ve heard great things about Jackson Pearce.

  • I can’t wait to see Maleficent! Anyway, I do like retellings, and I’ve read Splintered and Cruel Beauty. 🙂

  • Awesome. I’m still stuck on Cruel Beauty. I just need to hunker down and be patient with it, I supposed.

    • Oh no! I hope you get through it! I actually liked it very much.

  • I absolutely love fairytales, and fairytale retellings! 😀
But of those that you mentioned, I’ve only read Splintered – which makes me excited to read all of the others. I have heard of them, and they’re all on my TBR. I think I may have to have a fairytale retelling binge read soon!
Ohmygosh I am so excited about Maleficent. And you’re right, that song is superb.

    • Lana del Rey just knows how to capture the creepiness that is the movie. And yes, yoh should definitely read the books! 🙂

  • I really enjoyed fairest of them all, it was a great unique retelling. I am looking forward to reading Splintered, looks fabulous. I am currently reading Stiltskin, which I know you have not mentioned, but so far it’s really good. 🙂

    • Stiltskin is by who? I love reading about Rumplestiltskin, there aren’t much retellings of him!

      • It’s by Andrew Buckley, I am not very far in, but so far it’s really good and quite funny. 🙂

  • I LOVE fairy tales and Cruel beauty and you’ve highlighted some other books that I must read! For example, the book of lost things sounds amazing. Lovely post!

    • Comment bombing Jennifer here, I read The Book of Lost Things and you won’t regret it. I can say it’s one of the few books I’ve read that really give a terrifying twists on retellings. But like you, I’m dying to read the other ones Marianne mentioned XD
