I know that most of you reading this will think of me as a crazy person at the end of this post. But this is entirely my opinion, and I am entitled to differ. With that left clear…. ahem…
Oh. My.God. I know that more than half the Percy Jackson fans hated the first movie, and this one isn’t an exception, but oh wow. I had watched the first movie before I even knew there were books, even less FIVE. I was amazed by the effects, action, plot, all of it. And the book was even more astounding. Since I was a kid, I’ve had a thing with Greek Mythology, specially watching Disney’s Hercules. So, naturally, for me, Percy Jackson was like injecting me with drugs, specially since they were books.
I admit, the plot in general was suckish, completely changed in the first movie, Percy Jackson And The Olympians: The Lighting Thief, when compared to the book. I didn’t actually think that the second one would be made. I even started to accept that it was gonna be like the movie Eragon; four books and only one suckish movie. Though I loved the movie, when compared to the book, not so much. The same with Percy Jackson, and pretty much more than half the movies that are based on books. In the case of having in consideration a second movie of Percy Jackson, I didn’t know if it would work out, that with changing the prophesy and some other stuff. Still, when I saw the trailer that there was a second movie, I couldn’t contain myself.
Now, the movie was amazing. Maybe it was because someone really important, or even Rick Riordan, complained that the first movie was awful. And because of that they made a better work with this one. Either way, we have to keep in mind that this is an adaptation, so that means that its not gonna follow step by step the book. The prophesy was changed, YES, and instead of being when one of half-blood of the eldest three reaches sixteen, its when s/he turns twenty. Also, there were a few changes in the plot, story sequence, and the usual stuff (I don’t wanna spoil). And to be honest, I liked it, because it gives the element of surprise to the readers of the series, it gives them something new to expect of it. Plus, the effects were ubber awesome.
Maybe its just me, or maybe it was because of the company with whom I saw the movie, but I loved it.
Some Percy Jackson fans might feel betrayed, it’s okay. I can relate ENTIRELY. I had read Beautiful Creatures before I watched the movie this year. I saw it on last June. Oh God, my eyes got burned. To say I disliked it would be an understatement. I try to have in mind that its an adaptation, but they changed so much stuff! Vital things! And some things just felt weird to me, and plot holes. And it looked like a stand-alone movie, as if it didn’t have a sequel. No, just no, I refuse. But in the other hand, we have Warm Bodies. I did the same, and fell in love with the movie even more than the book, feeling that each one complimented the other. What I thought the book missed in the end (a lot more action), the movie had it and so on. So its a half-half thing when it comes to adaptations. There’s also the Harry Potter books. People LOVE those books and movies, and though I’ve only read until The Goblet of Fire, I think that they did a pretty good job in turning it into the big screen. They left a few things out, yeah, but they were still good, in my opinion.
I’d say, if you wanna see Sea of Monsters, give it a try. Put these two in each hand: Book plot vs Movie plot. I liked both, having them put as two different things. If I started to make a compare and contrast of them, I’d end up complaining of the movie with a biiiiiiiig list that would reach the bottom of the ocean (which is really deep). I know this post is a bit late, having in mind that the movie was released a few weeks ago, but I was busy with school and I just couldn’t edit the post.
Anyways, it was good. Go see it. Comment below whatever. What do you think of books turned to movies? Did you like what they did on Percy Jackson 1 and two? What do you hate or dislike of these movies when they get turned to the big screen? Let me know!
Have a great week! 😀
