Last to Know reminded me a lot of those band fanfiction stories I used to read in Wattpad, specially of One Direction. From the moment I started it I couldn’t tear my eyes away. I just had to go through with it as soon as possible and see what was coming after each page.
Micalea Smeltzer introduces us to her Willow Creek series with this Young Adult novel, Last To Know, that tells the story of a boy and a girl who fall in love, and how said boy keeps a secret from the girl that might cost them a potential future together once she finds out.
I was finishing my mini spring vacations and, while it was spring, I felt like it was summer and the world was full of possibilities and adventure because of this book.
Maddox was the ultimate book boyfriend. I am obsessed with him. Maybe as much as he is with Diet Pepsi. I loved his good-natured humor, ease, silliness, adventurous, and romantic tendencies. And he had a pet hedgehog. No kidding. The name? Sonic. Ha. I just couldn’t stop laughing at whatever he said and swoon hard, at the brink of fainting, whenever he said or did something sweet and romantic with Emma. The guy knew how to charm someone in the blink of an eye. But that wasn’t all there was to him. He had a rough start in life with his twin brother, Mathias (talk about sexy). Yet he didn’t let his dark past take the best of him, but rather he lived the moment and strove into making his dreams come true.
Emma was an enjoyable character as well. She was really down-to-earth, independent, smart, though a bit ignorant on some things like ONE REPUBLIC, THE FRAY, CONTEMPORARY MUSIC, which was her ultimate demise since her boyfriend was the drummer of an on-the-rise rock band. Other than that, I liked reading from her Point of View and how she was with Maddox through the book. She’s shown at first as someone who was kind of a loner who took refuge in her books and had a hard time trusting people because of her father abandoning her and her mom. But I liked how throughout the book she grew out of her shell by daring to do things with Maddox and learn to trust him. She was awesome, overall. I could see us one day being buddies. Only thing that bothered me of her was her overreaction to discovering Maddox’s ultimate secret, which he kept hidden for a reason that was okay. For me, it was okay at first how she was super upset about it, but for the quantity of time it lasted, bleh. I wanted to slap her. Oh well.
Other than the plot and the amazing character cast–from friends to family to the rest of the band–what made this book so great for me too was how it was written and how that made me feel while reading. It was quirky, easy, over the clouds, fun, everything you hope of a summer read. It reminded me a lot of the times I’ve spent with friends just enjoying ourselves and being carefree. It was amazing.
